You and a caseworker have been assigned to a 14-year-old client who has been newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The teen will have three or more insulin injections a day and frequent glucometer checks and appears both confused and terrified of his diagnosis. He says he does not understand what you are telling him and how this happened to him. Reflect on how you would approach this client and how you would compassionately explain the diagnosis and treatment to someone of such a young age. How do you address his questions of why this happened to him and how he got diabetes? How would you tenderly yet firmly explain to the nervous teen the treatment of diabetes and the importance of taking care of himself?
