- Use of Layers, Layers group, Adjustment layers.
- Final art work quality: implementation of multi-exposure methods, implementation of blending modes and collage methods to achieve the high level of complex Background Isolation Technique - ability to apply isolation from background techniques (one of from tutorial list) to apply the selected area to a new background with minimum losses of edge pixels. - Photo Retouch - Quality and Creativity Photomanipulation Technique: - use sorta in tools to achieve high standard result of commercial retouching (identify detectable damages and defects on a given photograph) - Photoshop Retouch Toolset: spot healing, healing, patch tool, content aware.
Overview: Photoshop assessment will include two parts the first part will require to demonstrate retouching skills, image isolation, and layer mask manipulation for containing large resolution image.
Task 1: Students need to take a photo with a DSLR camera (phone camera photos will not be suitable) or find a large resolution image (not smaller than 4000 x 3500 pixels), head and shoulder shot from copyright-free websites to use for the final project. The image should not be smaller than A4, 300dpi. Use of low resolution or copywritten images will lead to of deduction of marks up to 25 % because the final output will not be suitable for print. Original image should be retouched in Photoshop, use cloning stamp and additional cloning tools, layers, adjustment layers, create and modify selections, layer masks, and color management. The final image should be uploaded to Canvas in PSD format with all layers and effects to see. The resolution should be reduced to 72 dpi which will reduce final document size.
Once the photograph is modified enough, it can be used for part 2.
Task 2: Students must use an already retouched photograph for the development of a Poster using photographic artwork/collage with multi/double exposure (combination of two or more images) and/or implementation of blending modes and blending options (special effects such as peeling, cracks e.t.c). Appropriate text should be used in a suitable layout.
The work should have a metaphorical concept (theme) and demonstrate a high level of photoshop skills. Students should pay high attention to a range of quality of images (size of images in pixels), quality of created selections (layer mask selection) and identify and select appropriate tools for different types of selections. Ability to use layers, adjustments layers, manage layer masks and masks' edge modification. Approximately 20-30 layers should be developed during work on both images. As a final submission students should submit 2 files in PSD format to canvas (with all layers and effects able to be seen for assessment).
Submission Requirements - Print: A3 (high resolution 300 dpi) (final finished artwork only). Attach a cover sheet Canvas: Upload the finished files in PSD reduced resolution to 72 dpi format to Canvas, required formats: (PSD, PDF) The final PSD file must include all layers (not a flattened image).
Marking Criteria - Demonstrated an accuracy in following the details of the brief. Artwork level of complexity. The quality of final artworks. Demonstrated ability at applying various techniques to the artworks. Demonstrated levels of technical skills and knowledge in regards to the software used. Demonstrated the ability to generate additional required effects to the final stage. Working with selection tools such as pen tool, alpha channel masks, quick selection and refine edge tool. Working with layers, adjustment layers, blending mode and blending options. Working with type tool, modify and rasterise. Using a custom brush (load, delete, modify) to create a background and use it for a layer mask. Ability to put elements together for a relevant final product, the poster.
