Assessment Task: Teaching Resource for Inclusive Education
In this task you are to create a resource that demonstrates your understanding of inclusive education. It will demonstrate the theoretical and legislative elements of inclusion, and build on these to identify pedagogical approaches, practical strategies and resources to move towards inclusion in education. It also incorporates elements of collaboration with parents/ carers, respect and confidentiality, and how you could involve them in the planning and teaching process. This task aims to provide a foundation of options to draw on for AT3, where you can draw on this knowledge and understanding to apply your knowledge as you plan for a class cohort.
This resource file can be thought of in four parts:
1. Understanding development and issues that impact individual development
2. Rights, legislation and inclusion
3. Inclusive education pedagogies and strategies
4. Developing connections to learning
Below is a short description of each of these elements to be covered in the teaching resource.
1. Understanding development and issues that impact individual developments (C1, C2)
• Find two resources that demonstrate development
• Find two resources that discuss elements that can have positive/ negative influence on development
• Discuss what this means to you as a teacher.
In this section you should discuss development and the complex factors of difference that combine to impact individual development. This section should demonstrate your knowledge of development and learning abilities along with the issues and examples of how this can change. This task has a focus on your ability to cater for students with disability. Content should be created with consideration to a resource file - what elements would be useful to revisit as an educator in your specialisation that could support your knowledge and teaching of students?
2. Rights, legislation, and inclusion
• Link to and summarise 3 legislative documents
• Explain how you would address 1.5, 1.6 and 4.1 in your classroom
• Explain the links between legislation and inclusive education
This section of your resource file should identify the main legislative elements of children and young people to access education. It should identify legislative and rights-based documents relevant to education and highlight elements that are pertinent to teaching and education. These documents must be referenced. This section should also draw on references to identify what inclusion is, why it's important and how it answers the call from legislation.
3. Inclusive education pedagogies and strategies
• Find 3 references that link to inclusive pedagogies
• Find 5 resources you could use (for teaching or learning about the inclusive strategies) and give examples of activities you'd create using them
• Use theory to demonstrate your understanding of inclusive pedagogy and provide 3 examples of using it in the classroom
This section begins to answer the call for inclusion. It should demonstrate incorporate your knowledge of what inclusive education is, and how educators can plan for practice that makes learning accessible. It should draw on theory to identify and describe pedagogical approaches such as differentiation, universal design for learning, personalised learning and other approaches for inclusion. Each pedagogical approach should include examples of teaching strategies to demonstrate how you can apply the knowledge of theory into practice in the classroom. Examples can be specific activities, on-going routines and resources.
4. Develop connections to learning
• Explain why you might use an ILP
• Explain how you would work with parents to build the ILP and connect them with the classroom
• Create an ILP - be sure you use strategies listed in section 3
This section shows how you can bring this knowledge together to develop an Individual Learning Plan for a student. There are templates available on Moodle to complete. It should document how you would collaborate with parents, maintain confidentiality, and build a knowledge of the student in question. Moodle contain some profile elements to draw on for this section of the task. The ILP must contain three (3) goals for a student to demonstrate your understanding of an effective ILP.
