Developing a Stakeholder Analysis

To become more familiar with the project environment, you will conduct a stakeholder analysis. Use the following grid and information about each stakeholder to complete your analysis.

1. Create a list of project stakeholders. The following will provide a basis for your analysis.

  • L. T. Scully is the president and CEO of Husky Air. He hired Global Technology Services (GTS), the consulting firm, to work on the Pilot Angels project. He believes that this project will allow Husky Air to increase the number of charitable flights significantly but in a cost-effective manner. L. T. has the authority to authorize all payments for the project.
  • Alma Coleman currently schedules and coordinates all Pilot Angel flights using a manual system. She has been with Husky Air from the beginning, but has worked for various organizations over the past 40 years. She has mentioned to various individuals that she is apprehensive about using a computer and will consider retiring if the new computer system is "just too hard to learn." Alma just about knows all of the volunteer pilots and healthcare organization contacts on a first-name basis, and believes that an automated system will depersonalize these relationships. Although she maintains meticulous care of all the paper files and folders, she has been accommodating but not enthusiastic when she has had to interact with any of the GTS project team members.
  • Tim Williams is the project manager and one of the co-owners of GTS. Aside from contributing to the bottom line of GTS, this project, if successful, can lead to additional projects with Husky Air.
  • Sitaramin, Yan, and Pat are employed by GTS and members of the project team who will be involved in the design, development, and delivery of the new Pilot Angels system. Sitaramin and Yan are experienced and knowledgeable systems analysts who have the requisite database and programming skills. Pat is a network specialist with several technical certifications.
  • Volunteer pilots provide the means for transporting patients, organs, or medical personnel. They donate their time and use of their aircraft.
  • Passengers include patients, their family, care-givers, or other medical personnel.
  • Review the case at the end of Chapter 1 to come up with any other stakeholder whom you think should be included.

2. Complete the analysis:

  • Determine each stakeholder"s interest in the project. For example, you could represent a positive interest with (+1), a negative interest with (-1), or neutral interest with (0).
  • Define each stakeholder"s degree of influence. Use a scale of 0 (no influence) to 5 (high influence).
  • Describe any potential conflicts with other stakeholders.
  • Develop a metaphor for each stakeholder to reflect his or her role in the project (e.g., project champion, leader, ally, etc.).
  • Identify an objective for each stakeholder that will make the best use of the stakeholder if he or she has a positive interest in the project"s outcome, help to overcome any potential conflicts with other stakeholders, or gain the acceptance or approval of any stakeholders who may have a negative interest in the project"s success.
  • Develop a strategy that outlines how each stakeholder may be involved in the project. This should focus on attaining the objective you set for each stakeholder.
