Feature Writing Assignment -
Assessment 1 - Answer the following questions.
A story idea is the beginning of all feature stories. Having the ability to propose a clear, viable story idea from issues and developments in society is an essential skill that every feature writer must master in order to succeed in the profession.
The following are recent developments in Singapore. Assume you are a freelance feature writer. From these brief descriptions, you are required to apply the concept of a story idea to discuss how you would turn the given topical issues and developments into a well-developed story idea suitable for pitching to an editor of a target publication.
For each topical issue identified below, you are required to accomplish two tasks:
- Firstly, fully develop the issue into a viable story idea. Use your judgment of news values and what makes an attractive story idea to construct a pitch to the editor of a target publication.
- Secondly, identify a publication that is appropriate for your story idea and justify why your story idea is suitable. Your proposed publications can be magazines, newspapers, even newsletters, but they must be real-life publications currently in existence. You will be assessed on your ability to target your story idea for a suitable publication.
Here are the topical issues you need to work on for assessment 1:
- "In March 2018, a social studies textbook sparked controversy when it defined Singaporeans with low "socio-economic status" (SES) as those who "use Singlish or different dialects in daily conversation or at home, play football or basketball in HDB estates, eat at hawker centres or at home, or work part-time jobs during vacation time to meet family basic needs."
- "Crazy Rich Asians," a film adaptation of a book by author Kevin Kwan, dazzled at the U.S. box office with reported ticket sales of US$34 million in its first five days of opening alone. The film, set partly in Singapore, attracted significant local publicity."
- "In January 2018, Singapore's Ministry of Finance created a stir when it emerged that the government body had paid for over 50 social media "influencers" to post sponsored messages on their respective Instagram accounts to promote public awareness on Singapore's annual budget process."
- "The number of e-commerce scams on popular online marketplace app Carousell jumped a whopping 136% in the first half of 2018, according to figures from the Singapore police. A total of 1,020 cases of people being scammed on Carousell were reported between January and June, up from 432 in the same period last year. In fact, according to the police, 80% of all e-commerce scams reported took place on Carousell."
- In June 2018, bike sharing company oBike stunned users in Singapore when it abruptly announced that it had ceased operations. Scores of commuters scrambled to reclaim the mandatory deposits they lodged with oBike, which claimed it has more than one million users here."
