Introduction
The rise of nationalism and protectionist policies has become a sever issue in the modern global business environment. Globalisation encouraged countries to reduce trade barriers and support international trade and investment. This allows for MNEs to globally expand their operations, mainly to access cheaper labour and to develop efficient international supply chains. This, however, is contested by governments who are aiming to prioritise domestic industries, national security, and local employment rates over global economic integration.
Impact of Nationalism and Protectionism
Nationalism and protectionism policies are reshaping globalisation by further increasing tariffs, trade restrictions, and local manufacturing legislations (Enderwick, 2011). These policies aim to protect and boost domestic economic in comparison to foreign competition, however, still cause challenges for these MNEs. Many businesses may face higher operational costs, political uncertainty, and disruptions to global supply chain management due to these policies (Contractor et al., 2026).
There have been several global events that have accelerated this shift, with tensions between the USA and China have demonstrated the pawn-like nature of trade and its economic restrictions can impact international trade and MNEs (Lynch, 2024). Likewise, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed further weaknesses in global supply chains, encouraging many governments and businesses to focus on domestic production to strengthen their supply chain resilience.
Industry Examples
The technology industry has been significantly impacted by nationalism, with companies such as Apple and Huawei facing restrictions relating to technology exports, semiconductors, and international market access (Mariotti, 2024). Similarly, companies in the automotive industry have needed to adapt production and sourcing strategies due to various government incentives supporting domestic vehicle manufacturing.
Conclusion
The rise of nationalism is changing the way MNEs operate globally with businesses increasingly shifting towards regional supply chains and localised production rather than international operations, to reduce risk and remain competitive. This topic highlights how political and economic changes are reshaping international business strategy and globalisation.
