Metropolitan Hospital is a 750-bed teaching hospital, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. John Jenkins, the retiring CEO has been at the hospital his entire career, 27 years. He has focused his attention on internal operations, medical staff issues and serving the board of directors.

Metropolitan Hospital has suffered from reduced market share in recent years due to the development and growth of newer for-profit hospitals situated in the western suburban areas of Fort Lauderdale. The hospital has felt the impact of medical staff erosion as the doctors followed their patients to the suburbs. In addition, the shift to managed care and the significant increase in indigent patient care has played havoc with the operating budget of this aging facility.

The board of directors has appointed a search committee, chaired by Leon Greensmith, J.D., to find a new hospital CEO. The search committee has been charged with developing a job description for the position and retaining a national search firm. Mr. Jenkins has been asked to participate in the search. He is excited because he hopes to find someone with his exact skills to fill the position.

Mr. Greensmith, J.D., is struggling with the agenda for the first meeting of the search committee. He knows that the hospital must make a major change. He knows that only the right CEO will be able to face this monumental task.
