Assignment:
1. The technique of systematic desensitization is frequently used to treat persons suffering from phobias. This basically occurs in three phases... identifying a procedure that's effective in reducing the person's anxiety; developing a hierarchy for the phobic event/ object; progressively presenting the hierarchy through graduated exposure while the individual practices the specified relaxation technique.
2. Develop a systematic desensitization treatment for a concrete and familiar phobia (e.g. visiting the dentist to get a filling/ root canal or a fear of water/ heights, flying). Decide upon and justify the type of relaxation techniques to be used by your client and construct a complete hierarchy of scenes related to the phobia. Based on your relaxation technique and hierarchy decide whether to use in vivo or imaginary graduated exposure and justify your choice.
3. Design a program to change your own behavior (e.g. quitting smoking, eating more healthfully, studying more effectively). Consider ways in which you could alter your behavior, taking into consideration the need to keep behavioural records in order to recognize the rewards/ stimulus conditions that keep the behavior going- as well as the progress.
