A fish scale is a device that fishermen can use to weigh fish they caught. It works by attaching the fish to a spring, and by measuring how far the spring stretches, the scale can determine the weight of the fish. The scale is calibrated to work for a spring with a particular spring constant.

The spring in one such scale broke, and the owner replaced it with a different spring that has twice the spring constant. The fisherman did not, however, recalibrate the scale. When he hangs a fish from the scale, which of the following will it read?

  • One-fourth the fish's weight.
  • One-half the fish's weight.
  • The fish's weight.
  • Twice the fish's weight.
  • Four times the fish's weight.
