Assignment:

A double-threaded steel worm rotating at 1500 RPM meshes with a 50-tooth worm gear, with the design goal of transmitting 1 hp to the output shaft. The pitch diameter of the worm is 1.5 in (which is also the mean diameter). The tangential diametral pitch of the gear is 8 teeth/in and the normal pressure angle is 20°. We plan to overdesign the gearing so that it can transmit 25% more power than the design requires. To evaluate the suitability of the design:

a. What is the ef?ciency of this gear set? Assume high quality worm and gear, as needed.

b. Determine the power that must be supplied to the worm and gear and the friction power loss. Find the power loss both using ef?ciency and by ?nding V; and H} to con?rm the numbers match.

c. What torque must be supplied to turn the worm?
