The patient is 86 years old, and her ability to focus her eyes in a mirror is challenging. The patient is worried because she was told that the spot was as big as a dime, and she does not remember having a spot that remarkable before. Determine the factor that you need to consider. The most common type of skin cancer is benign melanocyte, so a colored spot is not alarming and does not require excision or biopsy unless pain or weight loss is also present. The incidence of a malignant melanoma occurring on the back is so vanishingly small that it is not considered an indication for excision of the lesion. Skin cancer is sometimes self-healing, so empirical observation for several months is reasonable to see whether there is restoration of normal integument through a self-curative process. Seborrheic keratosis can be as big as a dime and yet have no risk of invading adjacent tissue.
