Question -

(a) The circuit shown in Fig. 1.1 contains ideal diodes. Determine the diode currents I₁ and I₂. Make sure to clearly state and confirm any assumptions you make.

(b) The circuit shown in Fig. 1.2 contains ideal diodes. A triangle waveform with a frequency of 1kHz, zero average value and a range of ±10 V, is applied to the input of the circuit.

Sketch the input voltage v_in(t) and the output voltage v_out(t) on common axes over two complete periods. Make sure to label all salient features.

(c) A simple DC circuit containing a diode is shown in Fig. 1.3. It is known that the diode is forward biased so the current is given by i_D = I_Sexp(v_D/V_T). Furthermore, Kirchoff's voltage law ensures that V_S = i_DR + V_D.

Use these equations to iteratively compute the operating point of the diode, and in doing so, complete the table below.

(d) (i) Draw the circuit diagram of a simple half wave rectifier consisting of a single diode D, a smoothing capacitor C and a load resistor R.

(ii) Assume the rectifier is driven by a sinusoidal voltage. Sketch typical waveforms showing the input voltage, the voltage across R, and the diode current.
