Question -

(a) The circuit shown in Fig. 1.1 contains ideal diodes. Determine the diode currents I1 and I2. Make sure to clearly state and confirm any assumptions you make.

(b) The circuit shown in Fig. 1.2 contains ideal diodes. A triangle waveform with a frequency of 1kHz, zero average value and a range of ±10 V, is applied to the input of the circuit.

Sketch the input voltage vin(t) and the output voltage vout(t) on common axes over two complete periods. Make sure to label all salient features.

(c) A simple DC circuit containing a diode is shown in Fig. 1.3. It is known that the diode is forward biased so the current is given by iD = ISexp(vD/VT). Furthermore, Kirchoff's voltage law ensures that VS = iDR + VD.

Use these equations to iteratively compute the operating point of the diode, and in doing so, complete the table below.

(d) (i) Draw the circuit diagram of a simple half wave rectifier consisting of a single diode D, a smoothing capacitor C and a load resistor R.

(ii) Assume the rectifier is driven by a sinusoidal voltage. Sketch typical waveforms showing the input voltage, the voltage across R, and the diode current.
