a. The design specification for a transmission shaft states that the angle of twist must be no more than 1° over a length 20 times the diameter. Using this specification determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft to transmit 150 kW at a speed of 300 rpm. Take G = 80 GPa.

b. A solid transmission shaft is connected to a pump by a fl anged coupling containing eight 12 mm diameter bolts on a pitch circle of 225 mm diameter. The power transmitted is 110 kW at a speed of 500 rpm and the maximum shear stress in the shaft is to be equal to that in the bolts. It can be assumed that the bolts are loaded in shear only and carry all of the driving torque. Calculate (a) the shaft diameter and (b) the maximum stress in the shaft and bolts.
