REHABILITATION Blackboard assignment: Moral/Ethical Action Plan

Assignment Objective - Determine and implement a moral plan of action in response to ethically challenging situations that demonstrates adherence to professional ethical guidelines and values.

For each case scenario, answer the following questions:

A. What would you do?

In order to answer this question, you must develop a moral/ethical/legal plan of action that involves answering the following items:

1. What is the problem?

2. What are the facts of the situation?

3. Using the RIPS model, how would this situation be classified on the: Realm? Individual Process? and Situation?

4. Who are the interested parties?

5. Which and why ethical standards are potentially violated? (List ethical standards using the APTA documents)

6. Is there a legal issue and why? (list law from practice act)

7. Do I need more information?

8. List and analyze potential solutions (Why yes or no)

9. Choose a course of action and describe your rationale

B. Answer additional question based on your assigned scenario

SCENARIOS

Scenario 1 -

You are a PTA working in an outpatient neuro physical therapy office. You arrive at work and find out that the only PT on staff has called in sick. The office manager asks you to see all patients that day. The office manager also tells you not to worry for the new evaluations since they have been cancelled.

A. What would you do?

B. If you treated all the patients, would you be in violation of any legal or ethical standards?

Scenario 2 -

A patient is being seen for back pain with radiated pain to the R LE for the past 2 weeks. Part of his treatment includes use of thermotherapy. Today he complains of elbow pain. Based on the patient's PMH, you suspect tennis elbow. The patient knows that you are a very knowledgeable PTA and asks you to please help with his pain at least with a hot or cold pack as you find appropriate.

A. What would you do?

B. If you gave the patient a cold or hot pack to his elbow, would you be in violation of any legal or ethical standards?

Scenario 3 -

You are working with another PTA. The PTA is providing concurrent Physical therapy services to 2 privately insured patients. You noticed that your colleague asks a PT aide, who has been working there for many years, to provide US to one of his patients. The aide performs the US as instructed.

A. What would you do?

Scenario 4 -

You have been treating a patient for the past 8 weeks. The patient is making great progress and you think that he is able to run at this point. The patient reports that he feels excellent and has no pain. However, the patient tells you to make sure that you explain how poorly his knee is feeling and doing on your progress note that is going to the workers' compensation board.

A. What would you do?

A patient is attracted to you, and you are attracted to the patient. You know this for a fact because the patient told you.

Scenario 6 -

You are treating a 54-year-old patient who has a history of COPD and OA. The patient has been seen for physical therapy due s/p CVA. The patient lives with her sister's family in a 2 story house. The family appears very supportive since they are always present during therapy time. One day when you are alone with the patient for a few minutes, the patient tells you that her sister's husband forced her to sign a power of attorney. The patient tells you that she wants it back because she believes that her family is depleting all or her finances.

A. What would you do?

Scenario 7 -

Mr. Smith had a total hip replacement due to a fall. The PT assigned him to your rehab case load last week. Although polite, Mr. Smith does not seem to really engage or be interested in therapy and at times refuses therapy sessions. He often seems sad and on occasion you have observed him crying when going to his room. During today's treatment session, Mr. Smith decides to confide in you that his wife recently passed away and he does not want to keep on living without her. In addition, he does not want to be a burden to his grown children who have personal issues of their own. He deems that it would be best if he takes his bottle of sleeping pills and never wakes up.

Mrs. Jones has been your outpatient for the past 8 weeks after a total knee replacement. She has made excellent progress and is very grateful. On the last day of treatment, she pulls you aside and gives you a gift of $200. She knows that you are a new grad and could use some extra money.

Scenario 9 -

The daughter of your patient, Ms. Garcia, is very concerned that her mother is being discharged at the end of the week. You have been treating the patient at facility ABC for the past 3 weeks since her CVA. Although the patient has made significant progress she still requires assistance for transfers and gait. The patient's daughter would like you to treat her mother 3 to 4 times a week after you get out of work and continue with the plan of care that you are doing now. She is willing to pay you double what you make an hour.
