I - Determination of G Using A Simple Pendulum

OBJECTIVE - The objective of this experiment is to determine the acceleration due to gravity g by measuring the period of oscillation and the length of a simple pendulum.

PROCEDURE -

1. Measure the length L (in metre) of the thread. (Note that the measurement is made to the centre of the bob). Take care not to stretch the thread.

2. Displace the pendulum through 5o and then release it so that it executes oscillations of small amplitude.

3. Determine the period T (in seconds) by using a stop-watch to time 50 oscillations. By using 50 oscillations, rather than one, the error that arises through being unable to start and stop the watch when the pendulum is exactly in the intended position is greatly reduced. The error which remains is minimised by making the timings to the mid-point of the motion because that is where the speed of the pendulum is greatest.

4. Repeat (1), (2), and (3) for about five more values of L.

II - General instruction regarding heat experiments

If you are taking Petroleum or Chemical & Process Engineering, carry out experiment H1.

If you are taking Electrical & Electronic Engineering or TECNE, carry out experiment H2.

Title: H - Heat

Experiment H1 - Thermodynamic properties using Armfield TH3 apparatus

Objective 1. To study the relation between liquid and vapour states, by observing the relation between temperature and vapour pressure of a fluid, water.

2. To learn about the concepts of absolute and gauge pressure.

Procedure -

Pre-checks: check that the apparatus is about half full of water, with filling cap and drain value closed. The blow-down valve (right of diagram) must also be closed. Record the initial values of T1 and pressure.

Hating: turn the heat on full and allow to heat until the pressure is 7 bar. Observe that the digital indicator shows a pressure of about 700 kN m-2.

Settling at high pressure: open the blowdown valve for 30 seconds, then close and wait 30 sec. Repeat this twice more. This will bring vapour into contact with T1. Then turn the heat down to half.

Reading off the p*/T data: open the blowdown valve for 30 seconds, then close it. Record the pressure and temperature. Repeat this step until the pressure is 600 kN m-2, then turn heat down to one-quarter.

Again, open the blowdown valve for 30 seconds, then close it. Record the pressure and temperature. Repeat this step until the pressure is 300 kN m-2, then turn heal down to one-eighth.

Again, open the blowdown valve for 30 seconds, then close it. Record the pressure and temperature. Repeat this step until the pressure is 150 kN m-2, then switch heat off.

Now leave the blowdown valve open. Continue to record the pressure and temperature at intervals of 60 sec until-the gauge pressure is 20 kN m-2. When finished, leave the equipment with the blowdown valve open.

Note - They are 2 lab reports, you will do it in word document, and do graphs and all.
