Reading literature requires the reader to engage in the experiences of the characters.  Using one of our texts, Gilgamesh or The Tempest, explain how one of the characters has modified or changed your understanding of another human being or another character's actions.  What previous assumptions did you possess that now you realize were unfair opinions or prejudices.  Could you empathize with Gilgamesh, with Enkidu? Has anyone ever talked you into doing something you thought was a poor idea?  Do you have sympathy for Humbaba?

Who do you identify with in The Tempest?  Do Miranda and Ferdinand exhibit behavior and ideas appropriate to their age?  How do the characters learn to understand forgiveness?  Is Prospero's treatment of Caliban or Ariel unreasonable?  Are the characters acting out of fear, jealousy?  How do they handle grief?    In what ways are they vulnerable?   What morals do the characters exhibit?    Are the characters wise, self-righteous, arrogant?  As you answer any of these questions, you would have to include description, explanation, and commentary. 

For your Reflection Paper #1, take one character from Gilgamesh or The Tempest.  Explain how that character embodies a Jesuit value (either in the positive or the negative).  Explain how that character defines some idea important to your sense of what is good or what is evil.

Plot can be defined as describing or explaining the action, characters, setting of a work of literature.  Detailing plot and including description and explanation are often closely tied.  You need to go beyond giving plot in your commentary and your detailed examples.  If you do not know how to do that, get help from those I mention above or anyone else who will help you.  Just write your own paper.

All four of the following must be included:

1. Detailed definition of an Ignatian value

2. Application of Ignatian value to your main example/s

3. Explanation of the character/situation from Gilgamesh or The Tempest.

4. Your explanations, commentary, observations are key to earning a grade above average (a C).
