Problem Statement - What would it take?
Background - Vises and other work holding devices are critical to CNC production. Work holding needs to be reliable and affordable. There are material options that suit one or the other requirement, but not both-aluminum is reasonably priced and easy to machine, but is soft, tool steel is hard and durable, but expensive and difficult to machine.
It would be advantageous to be able to create work holding devices in 'our' factory. The following questions may shed some light on the problem.
Your assignment -
1. Orthogonal Milling--Determine the cutting force (F_c) for the two materials with the following assumptions:
Shear strength
i. Aluminum-37500 psi
ii. Tool steel-80000 psi
Friction coefficient of 0.5
10 degree rake angle
Chip width (w) =0.15in
Uncut chip thickness (t_o) = .001in
Thrust force (F_t) is 10% of the cutting force
2. Using the setup from question 1, plot cutting force for uncut chip thicknesses between .001 and .010 in .001 increments (i.e. .001, .002, ..., .010)
3. Cutting Speeds-Determine the time to perform a roughing operation for the main body with the following assumptions:
3/8in diameter carbide end mill
Cutting speeds (SFM)
i. Aluminum-1500
ii. Tool steel-175
Feed per tooth (in)
i. Aluminum--.006
ii. Tool steel--.001
700 inches of tool travel
4. Taylor Tool Life-Determine the number of tools necessary to complete a batch of 1000 parts for the two materials
Aluminum (n = .25, C = 3000)
Tool steel (n = .25, C = 1500)
5. Describe the cost/benefit analysis for using carbide tooling vs high speed steel tooling (pros and cons of each)
6. GD&T-for the three parts shown below, do the following:
Identify, indicate "features of interest"
Describe how they could be used as datums (which/how many degrees of freedom can/would they constrain)
For each feature of interest, use a feature control frame to indicate an appropriate GD&T geometric tolerance
For each tolerance, draw and describe the tolerance zone (include datum references where necessary)
7. Fixture Design-Describe a process you would follow for designing a fixture for the main base of the vise.
