Description
Understanding yourself is an important first step to identify and pursue your personal and professional goals. After working through the career thinking and development module and other learning activities (such as the ITP Metrics Assessment and the Introduction to Professional Identity [IPI] module), you will apply your learning to map career goals and to identify strategies to pursue them. The purpose of this assessment is to help you attain the intended unit learning outcomes (ULO1-4) through:
applying a framework and resources introduced in the career thinking and development module and Modules 1-4 to reflect on your personal and professional goals
identifying strategies to communicate and strengthen your personal qualities and intrapersonal skills to pursue your career goal
honing your skills in business and academic writing through the preparation of presentation slides and responses to key selection criteria
you will develop essential skills to effectively evaluate and articulate your strengths, personal qualities, and goals to attain future career success.
Part A: Presentation Slide Deck
Design and submit a two-page poster using PowerPoint (or equivalent applications) to address the following:
Page 1 of the Poster: Search job boards (e.g., seek.com.au) for your dream job. The dream job should be a position or a field that you aspire ultimately to reach in your career. This is likely not the first job you will do upon graduation but a position or career pathway that you aim to be in when your career has matured. Drawing on the learning in Module 5 and the DeakinTALENT career management thinking module, use a combination of images, photos, graphs, and text to illustrate details regarding your dream job - including job duties, skills, career advancement opportunities, qualities, qualifications and experiences essential to attain the role.
Page 2 of the Poster: Design and present your own Stepping-Stone framework (which was introduced in the DeakinTALENT career management thinking online module) by listing 3-4 opportunities that you may need to participate in to prepare yourself for your dream job. An opportunity could be an internship, international placements, and jobs (including the job title, major job responsibilities, and skill sets required in bullet points) that you can undertake. One of these opportunities should be a WIL placement you intend to undertake. Refer to ‘Exploring Your Career Options' in the Module 5 Learning Resources on MMM111's CloudDeakin Unit Site for the Stepping-Stone framework template.
Part B: Respond to Key Selection Criteria in a Word (or equivalent) format
Part B requires you to draft responses to 3 key selection criteria for a (fictitious) application for a work integrated learning (WIL) opportunity, using the STAR framework. Your submission should be for a role that you could apply for now, given your current skills and experience. This may be your first step towards achieving your dream role, or, if you are already in the workforce, the next step in your career towards your dream role.
The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program is a Deakin-supported platform that offers students in the Faculty of Business and Law a range of local and international opportunities to take part in internships, consulting programs, business venture start-up programs, and funded study tours.
Access the WIL webpage and identify an opportunity that will help you strengthen your skills and profile. Imagine you are going to apply for the program or position via the WIL platform and prepare a Word file to document your responses to 3 key selection criteria required by a position, using the STAR framework. Key selection criteria may include hard skills (specific qualifications, years of experience, technical skills) and soft skills (effective communication, ability to work as a team, analytical and problem-solving skills).
