Steel pilings are universally used as foundations for large buildings. These are often driven into the ground by hammer blows from a "pile driver." In certain soils (sandy, muddy) the piles can be "shaken" into the ground by attaching a "vibratory driver" which imparts a vertical, dynamic shaking force at or near the natural frequency of the pile-earth system. The pile can literally be made to "fall into the ground" under optimal conditions. Design a fourbar linkage-based pile shaker mechanism which, when its ground link is finnly attached to the top of a piling (supported from a crane hook), will impart a dynamic shaking force that is predominantly directed along the piling long, vertical axis. Operating speed should be in the vicinity of the natural frequency of the pile-earth system.
water flows steadily through a 30-ft-long pipe from a hot water heater to a faucet. the velocity is 9 fts. at the
You are to conduct a tensile test on a metallic specimen that will be cut from a bronze casting. However, the largest flat section of the casting measures 25mm x 25mm x 2mm. Consult the appropriate ASTM standard and suggest sub-sized specimen geometr..

This causes tangential and axial stresses in the outer surface of 400 and 200 MPa, respectively. Make a Mohr circle representation of the stresses in the outer surface. What maximum shear stress is experienced by the outer surface?
An isotropic pressure-dependent yield criterion for polymers, of the form f = A(σ 1 + σ 2 + σ 3) + B[(σ 2 - σ 3)2 + (σ 3 - σ 1)2 + (σ 1 - σ 2)2]1/2 = 1, has been proposed.
Gas in a closed system undergoes the power cycle as shown in the p-v diagram below as described by 1->2 is a constant pressure process, 2-> 3 is a constant volume process and 3 -> 1 is a pV = const. process. The internal energy U1 = U2 = 30 kJ/kg and..
The speed of sound in air is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature. If the speed of sound is 1126.0 ft/s when the air temperature is 68 °F (degree F), what will the speed of sound be when the air temperature is 105 °F (degree F)..
