Assignment:
Based on the readings in Steinberg (2014), two concepts that stand out in describing the "typical" adolescent are identity development and risk-taking behavior. Steinberg argues that adolescents are in the process of forming their identities and are more likely to engage in risky behaviors due to their still-developing decision-making abilities. In the documentary and podcasts, there were similarities and differences in how these concepts were portrayed.
On one hand, the adolescents featured in the programs were also grappling with issues of identity development, such as in the case of the transgender teen in the documentary "Growing Up Trans." On the other hand, the programs also highlighted unique challenges that some adolescents face, such as poverty, trauma, and mental health issues, which may impact their development in different ways than what is typically discussed in the readings. In terms of risk-taking behavior, the programs also showed a range of experiences.
For example, the podcast "Invisibilia" discussed how some adolescents may engage in risky behaviors as a way to assert their independence and autonomy, while the documentary "American Promise" showed how societal expectations and stereotypes can impact how Black male adolescents are perceived and treated, potentially leading to increased risk-taking behavior. Overall, the adolescents featured in the programs reflected both typical and atypical development.
