- Do a literature review on the status of "direct potable reuse" around the world including Sydney. Make sure to identify which places are currently doing it, which are considering doing it, and the challenges they are facing. Describe the process/technologies used.
3. Situational analysis
- Do a situational analysis using the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) framework if direct potable reuse is proposed in Sydney.
- Discuss each point in the analysis including public perception

- For direct potable reuse project, identify targeted key stakeholders, their roles, and how they will affect the project.
- Provide a stakeholder matrix, and rate their levels of interests and influence (put numbered level) (refer to class example).

- Develop and describe stakeholder engagement strategy for adoption of direct potable reuse. Describe appropriate engagement activities (e.g., stakeholder surveys, information days, issue paper)-expound each technique.

ASSESSMENT TASK 2: WASTEWATER REUSE PROCESS DESIGN REPORT

- Discuss the importance and the related issues of wastewater reuse for potable and non- potable purposes in Australia.
3. Current Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Assessment
- Provide a brief background on the Malabar WWTP including history, location, capacity, coverage, etc.
- Describe current wastewater treatment system at Malabar WWTP including all its processes components.
- Prepare your own detailed process layout diagram of the existing treatment plant.
4. Alternate wastewater treatment system using membrane bioreactor (MBR) (see Document B of 42991_Sydney Metropolitan Water Plan scenario)
Evaluate and propose an alternative treatment process design incorporating MBR as a new technology to replace some processes of the existing WWTP.
Draw on your own a process or flow diagram of the proposed alternate treatment plant incorporating MBR process. Use a different colour lines to distinguish the new components from the existing components.
Describe the rationales of the alternate treatment system and also the components of additional processes.
Conduct a detailed comparative design analysis of the proposed MBR system with the existing system.
- Calculate and compare the spaces required by the MBR to the and the current wastewater plant at Sydney using given design parameters or assumed from references if necessary.
- Calculate and compare the differences in total power (kW) and specific energy (kWh/m3) required between the MBR and current wastewater treatment systems.
Assume that the primary treatment for both conventional activated sludge and MBR treatment are the same; thus, only focus your comparison (space and energy requirements) to the secondary treatment.
Do not include in the design the use of valves, pumps, etc. Of course, you have to consider the aeration in the biological reactor and MBR.
Discuss the water quality characteristics of the current wastewater treatment plants (raw influent and effluents from each components).
Explain the advantages and disadvantages between the MBR and current wastewater treatment systems. Which option do you want to recommend and why?
4. Drinking Water Supply Augmentation
- Provide at least two alternate options to upgrade the existing waste water treatment plant to produce treated water for drinking supply augmentation.
- Draw on your own the wastewater treatment process flow diagram for all the options.
- Explain the rationale for the chosen additional process components - (you should detail your reasons for each component you use with consideration to the possible additional expenses for each component). No need to repeat rationales already described earlier.
- Discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of the two options as water supply. Do not just give a table of comparison, but you should explain the reasons behind backed by cited literature. Which option do you prefer?
- Discuss the water quality characteristics of the current wastewater treatment plant (influent and effluents) and the target water quality/characteristics of the recycled water for drinking water augmentation. Use WHO or other relevant drinking water guidelines.

- Discuss the importance and related issues of desalination for future water security in Australia.
3. Desalination Plant Design Assessment
- A process flow chart clearly shows your selected intake design, pretreatment process, RO process, and any other relevant processes.
- A detailed design of the RO process clearly describing key parameters such as types of membrane, number of banks, stages, vessels, elements, and recovery, etc. You can use computer aid design software such as ROSA or any other relevant software. You should also clearly discuss what you have done to optimise the RO process design. How do you ensure that you have satisfied the boron limit of 0.3 mg/L?
- Provide a comprehensive literature review on the impact of brine disposal on cuttle fish. Propose relevant options to mitigate any adverse effects of brine disposal on cuttle fish taking into account both economic and environmental considerations.
4. Shut-down plant of a desalination plant
- When dam levels rise, the desalination plant needs to be shut down. Provide a shut-down, operation and restarting plan of the desalination plant.
