Discussion Post I: Class Café
The Class Café may be used on an ongoing basis throughout your course for discussions with your peers that do not necessarily relate to the formal content of this course. While your Instructor will be in the Café during the first week to interact with you in an effort to get to know you and your peers, this space is intended to be an informal place for peers to interact and, thus, your Instructor may not monitor this area of the classroom. (NOTE: If your posting is of a personal nature or involves issues that are of concern only to you and requires an individual response from the Instructor, please e-mail the Instructor directly. If your question is of general interest and relates to the content of the course, please use the Contact the Instructor link so that everyone may benefit from the answer. Your Instructor will monitor this area of the classroom frequently.)
Task
Post a paragraph introducing yourself to your peers. Your introduction must include the following:
1. Describe the type of organization for which you work, an organization at which you volunteer, or even a larger community of which you are a part.
2. Have you ever experienced a major change within this organization or community?
3. How well do you think the change was implemented? Any thoughts on what could have been done differently?
Discussion Post II: Change Happens
Some people enjoy the challenges and creativity provided by constantly changing circumstances. However, for many individuals, change has a negative connotation and is laden with risk and uncertainty. Yet in today's workplace, change has become a standard component. As discussed in this week's resources, having a process in place to address change, whether it is anticipated or unplanned, helps to ensure its success.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Take a moment to reflect on your own workplace experiences and think about the changes that you have witnessed. For this Discussion, you should conduct additional research on the change process using the Walden Library.
As you do so, contemplate the following:
1. Consider the concept of change and how it occurs. Is it always a formal process, or often does it just happen? Why?
2. Consider the various types of change-for example, transformational, planned, unwelcome, or unexpected.
3. Think about your own organization or community and what types of change you have seen take place or believe needs to take place, and then think about the change process and the pitfalls that can occur.
Task
Post a cohesive response based on your analysis of the Learning Resources and your professional experience. Be sure to discuss the following:
1. Briefly describe a change you have experienced in an organization or in your community. Based on your experience and observation, be sure to discuss what went well and any barriers or pitfalls you observed.
2. Analyze the steps taken during the experienced change. What steps do you think contributed to what went well, and what do you think could have been done to improve the outcome of the change?
3. Examine how the type of change impacts (e.g., transformational, planned, unwelcome, or unexpected) the change process.
4. As a result of what you have learned from your example and other experiences, as well as the readings and your research, examine how you will both manage and lead change. Analyze the difference between managing and leading change.
