Question: What: Using at least 3 key identity concepts studied in class, describe the social factors that contributed to how you identify today and reflect on whether you see yourself as "cosmopolitan."
Potential identity concepts: occupation, nationality, cultural background, sexual preference, gender, relationship status, familial status (father, mother, daughter, son, etc.), interests, socio-economic status, religion, racialization, cosmopolitanism, etc.
The purpose of this assignment is to invite a reflection on how you see yourself as a being moving in this world and how the way in which you see yourself influences how you encounter others. There is no right and wrong here. There is only what matters to you and what you are comfortable sharing.
I would suggest that you do the following, but I am open to your own choices about format too. This is only intended to help if help is needed.
Choose three identity concepts that you are going to focus on.
a paragraph about each. Why is it important to you? How does it shape how you move in and see the world? How might it limit you in certain ways? How has it changed/will it change as you have lived/will live? How does it impact how you interact with other people? How does it impact what you like to read/watch/do and what is important to you for the future?
After you've written these three paragraphs, take a step back from them and think about how they are tied together. Use the connections you see among the three concepts to write an introductory paragraph about who you think you are/how you understand yourself, but keep in mind how others mind see you too. It should summarize and prepare the reader for the details to come.
Write a conclusion in which you consider the identity concepts you have chosen within a cosmopolitanism framework (as defined by Appiah). Do you see yourself as cosmopolitan? Do you think there are problems with that term? What is your relationship to your college mission statement about preparing students to be ethical leaders in a global world? Why do any of these things matter? Or do they, in your opinion?
