The Public Universal Friend would draw hundreds of disciples, traversing New England by horseback while wearing male minister's clothing. After a severe illness In 1776, a young Quaker woman named Jemima Wilkinson awoke from a fever claiming to be the Public Universal Friend, a non gender specific prophet of God. Jemima Wilkinson applied the Bible verse Galatians 3:28: "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
