Think back to the representative audience member that you wrote about in your first Audience Exploration assignment. Now imagine a representative audience member that is the polar opposite. For example, if you described a twenty-something liberal college student from an upper-middle-class family, the opposite audience member might be a fifty-something conservative steelworker struggling to make ends meet.

First, describe the opposite audience member in a paragraph or two. Give me the short version. Demographics, income, assets, beliefs, geographic location, etc. What is their health situation? What are they frustrated about? What are their hopes? Their fears? And most importantly: what is their general disposition on your topic.

Next, describe how you might change your argumentative essay to reach them. Would you need to establish any new definitions, or present a new argument of fact? What would you expect them to know already? Would you employ different rhetorical tactics, like using more logos instead of pathos, or vice versa?

Would they be receptive to your proposal? (The one you wrote in class on Wednesday). If not, what must they understand before you can present your proposal? What objections would you anticipate? And finally, what compromises would you be willing to make to your proposal?

Your total response should be between 350-400 words. Single-spaced and uploaded as a word doc or pdf. The purpose is simply to consider how you would approach a different audience.
