In today's workforce, it is not uncommon for employees to work in various teams throughout the day, performing different functions to achieve outcomes. In organizations, groups may be homogeneous, composed of members with very similar characteristics, or they may be heterogeneous, composed of members with very different characteristics (e.g., roles, gender, race and ethnicity, age, experience on the job, job function, and/or position in the hierarchy). Technology and globalization have given organizations the ability to bring team members together from all over the world, resulting in more team heterogeneity. Organizations are more likely to expect their employees to adapt to working with diverse group members. Team heterogeneity has the potential to have both positive and negative impacts on team performance and employee satisfaction.
