Problem

Oftentimes, migrants can struggle with connection when they integrate into a new part of the world. Fundamentally it is a responsibility for both the immigrant and the native community to embrace each other, and in doing so we can create a new community combined. Due to local struggles with socio-political struggle and demographic issues, migrant communities in America suffer on top of the usual struggles that these groups can face. Marginalization, social conflict and discrimination are all difficulties that people can face immigrating to America. It is important for advocates for social justice to face these issues head on, and as social workers for us to highlight and address these issues facing modern immigrant communities. It has been shown that due to marginalization and discrimination, immigrants in modern communities can suffer from higher reported issues with mental health (Elshahat, S., 2024). Mental health struggles escalate due to the consistent change in environment and culture shock, and as a result many migrants suffer from an increasing set of problems over time, which create more interpersonal struggles. It should be noted that reports that immigrants struggle with mental health more is an internationally recorded issue (Meigs, R., 2025), however there is no data specifically on my community.
