Essay 1 Assignment

Write a 500 word essay

Describe, in great sensory detail, a place that you love or that you associate yourself with.  It might be the house in which you grew up, the dream house you hope someday to build, the car you "live in" including everything stuffed into it, a garden you've planted, or the office or shop where you work.  Any place that is important to you and that you know well will be suitable for this assignment, as long as it is no bigger than a neighborhood.  You may organize your details "spatially" or "chronologically," and you may describe the place in one moment of time or at different times of the day, week, or year.

A descriptive essay has a point to make (a "thesis") and uses sensory details to make this point.  The thesis of a descriptive essay is the central impression that the place has made on the writer--and which (s)he, in turn, wants the description to make on the reader.   Make sure that your essay has a thesis and that you choose and organize your details to support the thesis
