Musical genres often define subcultures. The onset of jazz in the late 19th and the early 20th century is just one example. Discuss the following for this assignment:

• What are some other examples of subcultures here in America that are associated with a specific style of music?

• Describe how your example fits the definition of a subculture.

• Expand and comment on what the terms of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism might mean in this context.

• How do people who identify with a given musical subculture interact with and view people from other subcultures or those who identify with the larger popular music culture?
