Facilitating Language Development through a Thematic Instructional Unit
This unit is to be designed for 3-4 year olds in an integrated preschool classroom/setting.
Planning Components:
Step 1
Choose a theme: (You should have already done this)
Some examples:
• Holidays
• Community Helpers
• Insects
• Body
• Fruits and Vegetables
• Transportation
• Farm Animals
• Zoo
• Family
• Community
• Math area (measurement, time, geometry, etc)
• Science area (weather, specific environments plants, etc)
Step 2
Choose 2 books to read and explore related to the theme.
Identify by title and author.
If it is an online book, identify website.
Step 3
Brainstorm and list Target Vocabulary (what vocabulary should the children learn and use) related to the theme. Be sure to include vocabulary from the two books you chose
After you compile your list, than place the vocabulary on the "Target Vocabulary Word Class" form. (attached page 3)
Step 4a
Write a lesson plan to teach and practice 4-6 vocabulary words from the above list. This will be a small group activity.

As Part of independent practice on the vocabulary lesson plan:
Identify centers (dramatic play, literacy, blocks, art, manipulatives, etc.). Describe how you will design the centers to encourage the specific vocabulary for this unit. Get Assignment Help from the Best tutors!
Step 5
Phonological Awareness Skills Objectives to choose from:
Objective 1: Child combines words to make a compound word (e.g. foot + ball =football)
Objective 2: Child segments words into syllables
Objective 3: Child combines onset and rime (can be a rhyming activity, or blending)
Objective 4 Child segments words into phonemes such as
a) can identify beginning sounds in words, b) can identify ending sounds in words, c) can identify all sounds in words.
Write a 1 lesson plans to address 1 of the above objectives (needs to be related to the theme). This is a small group activity.
