1. The language of death and dying is often indirect. In your text, on page 11 there is a list of metaphors, euphemisms, and slang associated with talking about death and dying. Some may be familiar, some may be new to you. Describe the words that you, your family, your friends, and your culture use. What are your thoughts about how we use language?

2. Watch/listen to video on Death Café. Discuss your reaction to this video and the idea of a Death Café.

3. The family, peer group, school, community, culture, and media socialize our responses to and impressions of death. This begins in childhood and is an ongoing process throughout our adult years. Describe how you were socialized to view death and how that may or may not have changed throughout the years.

4. Self-care is essential for social workers when working with issues of loss and grief, dying and death. You must be intentional about engaging in activities that nourish creativity and uniqueness. What do you do for self-care? If you have plans to add to your self-care tool kit, what are they?
