Assignment Description
Scripture highlights the importance faith and trust in a variety of stories throughout the Old and New Testaments. This is particularly demonstrated at the time of the birth of Christ, where many prophesies were fulfilled and the ultimate hope for humanity was brought to earth in the form of God in the flesh. For our focus in this discussion, review the following stories.
Luke 1:5-25: Zechariah and Elizabeth
Luke 2:36-38: Anna the Prophetess
Both of these stories describe great faith. Consider the many years that Zechariah and Elizabeth waited for the coming of John the Baptist, and ultimately the coming of Christ. In addition, consider the patience and hope Anna practiced and maintained throughout her lifetime as she waited for the coming of the Son of God. Note the connection to the Fruits of the Spirit here.
As you review and reflect upon these stories, respond to the following questions:
WHAT PARALLELS CAN YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR OWN LIFE WHEN CONSIDERING THE THEMES OF HOPE AND FAITH IN THESE STORIES?
What might Zechariah, Elizabeth, and Anna have experienced as they waited many years for these events to occur? How have your experiences with waiting for fulfilled hopes and answered prayers in your own life connected to these feelings and thought processes?
How do these stories relate to our course topics? Include at least one reference to our assigned reading and one relevant scripture verse as you address this question.
