Problem
The Jensen heuristic proposes that some argumentative solutions are "forward to Utopia," while others are "back to Eden." Suppose that the problem we are dealing with is childhood obesity. What would be a "forward to Utopia" solution? What would be a "back to Eden" solution? Briefly illustrate/explain.
Vernon Jensen says that any number of factors should be taken into account when it comes to analyzing the source of a problem. Take the problem of racial discrimination and briefly discuss it in terms of any two of the following distinctions:
a) whether the problem is one of "commission" or "omission"
b) whether the problem is "local" or "distant"
c) whether the problem is one of "attitude" or "deed"
[In each case, sketch out two conflicting interpretations about the nature of the problem.]
Question 1. Jensen also says that some problems have a "personal" cause or villain, while other problems may allege an "impersonal" cause or villain. How so? Take the problem of drug addiction and illustrate the difference between a personal and an impersonal villain.
Question 2. Describe the difference between a constructive and rebuttal speech.
Question 3. Use the examples from the book and the appendix to create three policy propositions.
Question 4. Describe the difference between a procedural and substantive argument.
Question 5. Discuss the different responsibilities for the affirmative and the negative sides in the debate.
Question 6. What is the purpose of the negative block?
