4. In Chapter 16 we are introduced to Sociological Aspects of Later Adulthood. We are aware that our life expectancy has increased due to modern medicine, and modern medicine has the potential to be a stabilizer regarding some chronic illnesses.
"The medical expenses of an older person average four times more than those of a young adult. One of the reasons medical costs are high is that older adults suffer much more from long-term illnesses- such as cancer, heart problems, and diabetes". (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman, Hessenauer, 11ed., page 652).
"People 85 and older constitute the fastest-growing age group in the United States. Older Americans are living longer, due in part to better medical care, sanitation, and nutrition. Those who are 75 and over are creating a number of problems and difficult decisions for our society. The old-old with major health problems are putting strains on family resources" (Page 702).
