Assignment: Aging & the Life Course

In this country, getting a driver's license at the age of 16 is a significant event in many teenagers' lives. Think of some other transitions that mark steps from childhood to adolescence or from adolescence to adulthood, or adulthood to 'old age.' This could be something you went through yourself, or something you've been told about by parents or other relatives.

I. Describe what happens in this ritual or transition. How public is it - who knows when a person has gone through this transition? What are the norms for how this transition comes about? How formalized (strict or regulated) are the rules, and are they applied to everybody in the same way (e.g., older and younger siblings, daughters and sons)? What is the significance or cultural meaning attached to this transition, and is this the same for everybody? Get the instant assignment help.

II. Describe a major event or historical development that has happened in your lifetime, and speculate on how you think it affected people your age. Try to think of an event that had national or international consequences, either in the U.S. or in another country. Did the event or development affect everyone in your age cohort the same way, or were there major differences by gender, race, class, or other division?

III. Contrast how this event affected your cohort with how you think it affected people in earlier cohorts - people the age of your older siblings, parents, or grandparents. Did (or will) it have any affect on people who are younger than you? Did it affect people in other countries, and how might the effects be different there versus here?
