Assignment Overview

You are required to produce a video response to the following critical analysis question:

The most important contingencies in organisational design have changed over time. Previously, the most important contingencies were size, strategy, human resources (people), and environment (external). With the arrival of more advanced information and communication technologies, some say that technology is now the most important contingency. What do you think is the most important contingency in organisational design and why?

This will be an excellent opportunity for you to show your streams of thought and various considerations to the question. The key purpose of this video is to convince managers that your opinion is valid, through good research and drawing together the points for your argument.

Key tip: Your are free to explore this this question in a context important or preferred by you, including: General management, Human Resources (HR), Hospitality, Project Management, or Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Please make sure that your context is stated and defined clearly in the introduction of your video.

This short video presentation should last at least 5 minutes, but not longer than 6 minutes (a penalty will apply if your recording goes under 5 minutes or over 6 minutes). The video could be recorded with your mobile phone camera or your laptop camera, for instance. You may want to add PowerPoint, images, charts, and other figures to help you communicate the content. The quality of the video should be good enough to be clearly seen and heard, but your video-making abilities will not be marked. The video should be recorded in mp4 format in small file size.

Clearly define context: Tell us very briefly what ‘organisational design' is and what factors it entails. A good starting point to answering this question is understanding the organisational contingencies in Chapter 10: Organising of the textbook, available from the library.

Utilise research in your answer: When you are proposing an answer, make sure you research beyond the book about contingencies in organisational design. Bring some key points made in the articles to support your answer. The articles can be from academic journals or professional publications (Forbes, Economist, Bloomberg, etc). Remember: An opinion that is backed with good research carries more weight!
Structure your answer: Take down some notes of what you want to talk about. What is the story you are trying to tell? What are the main points? This way, you will not get lost in your delivery and always stick to your message.
