Gender-Based Medicine Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the complexities of sex and gender as they impact a specific group of healthcare professionals today.

Create a video in which you tell an engaging and informative story to a target group of healthcare professionals such as radiologists, dental technicians, PTAs, respiratory therapists, or administrators. If you are shy about being on camera, use puppets, cutouts, stuffed animals, or friends and family as actors. Avoid creating a deadpan, boring lecture; have fun with this!

Your videocan be funny or serious, but it should convey the following information in whatever order makes sense to you:

• Your target audience.
• The differences between sex and gender.
• Important biological and behavioral differences between males and females that are crucial to providing adequate care by your target group.
o Include how the complexities of gender identity create challenges for healthcare professionals who must treat the biological sex of patients who identify with the opposite gender. Describe one of those differences as it relates to your target group's field of care and explain the risk factor(s)it poses.
• Educate your audience about how a lack of gender-based prevention, management, and therapy negatively impacts care for males and females.
• Identify new approaches to gender-based care -- such training medical personal, changing clinical procedures, altering therapies, and drug development -- that might benefit patients of both sexes and explain why you consider them to be important.

Creating your video:
• Your video should be 10 minutes or less. If your video is shorter that 5 minutes, you've probably missed something.
• You can have some notes, but should not read from a script.
• Be engaging. Look at the camera.
• Post your video on YouTube. If you do not have an account, it is easy to sign up for one.
o Make sure your video has completed uploading to YouTube.
o Make sure to set the video permissions to public or unlisted. If it is set to "private" I won't be able to open or view your creation.
o Find the "Share" link on the video page.
o Copy and paste that link into the correct space on your assignment.
o Click on your link to make sure it goes back to the video. If not, you'll need to figure out the problem. A Google search can help you do that.
o Only when the link on your assignment is working properly should your assignment be submitted for grading.

There are multiple methods to create your video.Here are some guidelines that might help.

• In terms of a story, most students recreate an interaction they have had or imagine having with a patient or patients. Some produce a lecture in which they tell the story as a lead-in to answering the assignment questions. Sometimes they answer all the assignment questions within the story.

• Students who like to get creative have used Barbie dolls, stuffed animals, Easter Island heads, family, friends, and even pets to make their videos.

• Some have created their videos at work using coworkers.

• Some have made their videos fun and entertaining. Others have been very serious.

Honestly, the possibilities are endless!

• Just don't sit in front of the camera and talk. Doing that can cost you points for boring your instructor. ;-)

• Make sure to answer all the assignment questions. As with written assignments, points are lost for missing content.

• Lastly, don't overthink this. It is intended to be a fun learning activity.
