Assessment
Structure of essay
The assessment is an essay and consists of two parts, which will involve staged assessment, as follows -
Research strategy
The purpose of the first part (Part a) is for you to demonstrate you have developed a research strategy and a conceptual and framework in relation to your chosen client group. This would include a brief description of your topic, an introductory statement/proposition, an outline to identify the areas/issues to be addressed, identified relevant research that will be relied upon for each issue and the structure of your essay.
Essay
The second part (Part b) will be the full essay, based substantially on what you had outlined (in Part a), taking into account any feedback received as part of assessment of Part a.
The essay topic
The assessment will require you to research and review the welfare law and its application in practice for one of the following vulnerable client groups:
mental health inpatients requiring protection of their human rights
children requiring protection from parental abuse
people with a disability requiring protection from discrimination in the workplace
elderly requiring protection from financial abuse
Your essay must include the following:
analysis of the reasons why legal protection is needed
overview of the relevant principles of welfare law that underpin the legal protection
critique of the current application of the law for legal protection of your chosen vulnerable group
Research literature
Your essay must be based on a review of the literature and should include at least 8 current peer-reviewed (scholarly) journal articles or book chapters. This is in addition to any textbook, websites or other references you use.
Do not rely upon non-academic and other web-based materials as these in no way constitute academic references for the purpose of your assignment. If you rely on such sources for theoretical support, you will be deemed NOT to have met the requirements of the assessment.
Jurisdiction-specific context
Your response to the selected client group involves you undertaking research to identify and apply the framework of services and arrangements involving the departmental, legislative, court, tribunal and administrative structures that operate in and are applicable to a specific jurisdiction (ie State or Territory), the one in which you presently reside
