Foundations of Public Health
Aboriginal health and FASD
After this tutorial, you should be able to demonstrate skills in analysing a public health issue, specifically:
Synthesise information to describe a public health issue i.e. the size of the problem, its determinants, impacts and at-risk groups;
Identify issues related to the measurement or study of the causes of a public health issue;
Identify potential interventions to control a public health issue while recognising needs of the target groups;
Recognise the importance of respectfulness of culture including community participation and involvement in research.
Discuss these questions in relation to the reading:
What is the public health issue described in the paper by Fitzpatrick et al?
Describe the groups most at risk of this problem in Australia and the factors underlying this increased risk.
How was Fitzpatrick et al's study population defined and what was the response fraction in this study? Is this appropriate?
How large a problem is FASD among Aboriginal Australians living in the remote Fitzroy Valley? How does this compare to general populations? (do we have recent data?)
What were the measured impacts of FASD in the Fitzroy Valley study? What are the long-term impacts likely to be on individuals with this condition and their families?
What are the issues related to estimating the prevalence and causes of FASD?
Give examples of how this study could be an "exemplar" of research that includes Aboriginal community consultation and involvement?
What sorts of interventions could assist in reducing FASD risk in Aboriginal communities? Consider cultural appropriateness and community involvement.
Title of E-tivity: Maternal and child health: FASD
Purpose of the e-tivity
Integrate the learning from tutorial questions
Task:
Review the tutorial materials and complete the associated questions on LMS Week 7, this will provide you with the necessary background for this activity. Get in touch with us for online assignment help service!
From the tutorial activity identify three barriers to improving outcomes for FASD and briefly explain each one. (List in brackets at the end of each of these three points the public health disciplines that may assist in overcoming the barrier -for each discipline give brief explanation why in dot point 5-10 words) Your discussion board post should be a maximum of 200 words (excluding references in word count, although you should reference)
Discussion:
Read at least two other students' submissions and comment on them (max 100 words per post).
