Assignment - Steps Required to Develop the WBS
HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR WBS
Introduction & Overview
There are six key steps needed to complete your Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). These include:
(1) Defining the Workstreams;
(2) Expanding on the Workstreams to include the Scope of Work;
(3) Inserting the Milestones;
(4) Adding predecessors to facilitate sequencing;
(5) Adding durations to tasks; and
(6) Rationalising the sequencing.
The activities needed to complete each of these steps are explained in the following sections of this document.
Completing the NPV-ROI-Payback Worksheet
1 After downloading this file from the LMS, make a copy on your computer using the convention listed in the Assignment 1 Information Sheet.
2 When entering data into this worksheet, only insert information into the cells highlighted in yellow. If you adjust any of the other cells, it may damage the formulas and you will get the wrong answer.
3 Go to table near the bottom of Page 5 in the Assignment 1 Information Sheet.
4 Extract the ROM Costs/Expenditures information from the Assignment 1 Information Sheet table for Years 0 to 3 and insert this into the appropriate cells (B12 to E12) on the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet.
5 Extract the ROM Benefits/Revenues information from the Assignment 1 Information Sheet table for Year 0 to 3 and insert this into the appropriate cells (B16 to E16) on the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet.
6 From the second bullet point within the Assumptions section (which begins near the bottom of Page 5 in the Assignment 1 Information Sheet) identify the inflation rate, and insert this into Cell B5 within the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet.
7 From the third bullet point in the Assumptions section (which begins near the bottom of Page 5 in the Assignment 1 Information Sheet) identify the interest rate, and insert this into Cell B6 within the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet.
8 Go to the table at the bottom of Page 2 in the Assignment 1 Information Sheet and find the Planned Formal Project Start Date (in the left hand column of the third row of this table). Insert this Start Date into Cell B8 within the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet.
9 Carefully check that you have entered the data correctly in all of the specified cells.
10 Once you are confident that you have the correct result (because you have entered the data correctly and not damaged any of the formulas), you can now enter the information into the tables at Section 3.1 within the Project Charter. The information should be transcribed as follows:
The Discounted ROM Costs/Expenditure information should be drawn from Cells B14 to E14 in the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet. Make sure that the data is properly aligned to the years as you insert this into the first Section 3.1 table.
The Discounted ROM Benefits/Revenues information should be drawn from Cells B18 to E18 in the NPV-ROI-Payback Sheet. Make sure that the data is properly aligned to the years as you insert this into the first Section 3.1 table.
The Net Present Value (NPV) can be found in Cell F20 within the NPV-ROI-Payback worksheet, and this result should be entered into the appropropriate cell in the second table within Section 3.1. of the Project Charter.
The Return on Investment (ROI) can be found in Cell B23 in the NPV-ROI-Payback worksheet, and this result should be entered into the appropropriate cell in the second table within Section 3.1. of the Project Charter.
The Payback Period can be found in Cell A22 in the NPV-ROI-Payback worksheet and it is listed in terms of the number of years. Insert this into the appropropriate cell in the second table within Section 3.1. of the Project Charter.
Completing Weighted Analysis Worksheet
1 On the ‘Weighted Analysis' worksheet, develop the content for Column A, by adding the skills/knowledge/experience that you will want from the various subcontractors. The key is to remember that you don't know about any of the technologies covered in the Technical Architecture. Therefore, you will have to ensure that the contractors do. This can be done easily by covering the same workstreams and elements explained in the Topic 3 Workshop. As a reminder of this, a copy of the technical architecture diagram has been provided in the spreadsheet. You will be expected to come up with about 30 of these requirements (in addition to the ones listed already). These solutions should reflect all of the elements in the architecture diagram (and would be very similar in some respects to your WBS).
2 Once you have done the listing in Column A, work through Column B and insert appropriate weightings (on a scale of 1 to 5, as outlined in the top table to the right of the weighted analysis columns). These should be provided for all of the requirements.
3 Once you have completed Step 2, in the yellow-headed columns for each of the three companies (Columns C, E and G), insert numbers associated with the ‘Scoring of Identified Solution'. These should equate to the numbers listed in the bottom table on the Weighted Analysis worksheet (e.g. on a scale of 1-5). Within this framework, you can put in any scores you like in columns C, E and G. The key is to cover off all of them, so you would get a final score. The numbers that you choose are not important in this case. They would normally be applied once the RFTs have been reviewed.
