2. Quality in medical care may be defined as achieving the greatest benefit at the lowest risk. How have the priorities of our health care system and the allocation of resources addressed this goal?

3. Contrast the definitions of implicit and explicit criteria in assessing health care quality. How is each type of criterion useful in quality assessment?

This Module explained the focus of different types of research and how each type contributes to the overall advances in health and medicine. Health services research, a newer field that addresses the working of the health care system rather than specific problems of disease or disability, was described. The offices and goals of its major funding source, the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), were listed. Finally, research into the quality of medical care, the problems being addressed, and the research challenges of the future were discussed.
