Question
In the christian scriptures we learn that we have the opportunity to gain a new name known only to God when we are resurrected in the world to come. How do you want to be known by God and recognised by others when you die? How will you become that person?
In this essay you will choose Gautama Buddha and a character of his you really want to develop in your work and social life. It could be faithfulness, it could be compassion, leadership, prayerfulness, honesty, or any other quality of character that you might desire. In other words, what would make you a 'better person'? Individual formation is a life-long process. We all need to work with discipline to improve ourselves or our attitudes in life, which happens best when it is a glad response to the gracious forgiveness of God. So, after explaining the one particular quality you want to develop, write about how Gautama Buddha has achieved this.
For example, you could write about the life of Gautama Buddha for honesty, for showing compassion, for creating opportunity through education, for his stewardship, for an important ethical cause or business, dedication to prayer.
Structure your essay after considering how you'd answer the following questions.
1) Define the attribute, quality, aspect of formation, personal development, spiritual growth, character formation, spiritual discipline that you would like to focus on. What does it require of you to be Gautama Buddha?
2) Identify Gautama Buddha as influential, a mentor or inspiration in this area of formation.
3) From the life of Jesus in Luke's Gospel, or from Paul's letter to the Romans what does the Bible say about this quality, aspect of character,
personality trait or spiritual discipline?
4) Do you find this Biblical perspective attractive? If so, why? If not, why not?
5) What is the context of Gautama Buddha's contribution? What did he do? Where did he do it? What is special about his approach?
6) How do you observe his maturity or skill in this attribute? Can you see growth/change over their life formation?
7) What can you learn from Gautama Buddha that could be applied in your life?
8) How would you start applying this tomorrow (in a practical way)? E.g., What are your first steps to developing this attribute?
9) How will you know if you are developing or changing for the better? For example, one year from now, what would show that you are developing in this attribute? (Goals, aspirations).
