1. Severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID) is fatal at an early age. SCID is caused by the lack of the enzyme adenosine deaminase, which is encoded by the gene ADA. Suppose you want to use a gene therapy method to treat the disease. You have DNA that contains the ADA gene and a virus that infects human cells. Design a protocol to get the ADA gene into the viral DNA.
2. Define restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. The information generated from RFLP is useful in criminal investigations. Suppose some DNA samples are taken from a crime scene, suspect, and the victim. The samples are amplified by PCR, and then subjected to RFLP analysis. Below is a gel electrophoresis of the RFLP results. D1 is from defendant 1; D2 is from defendant 2; V is from the victim; and S1, S2, and S3 are from the crime scene. Speculate on how these results would have an impact on each defendant.
3. Define genomics and proteomics. Name two techniques that are used in each field of study. Protein is translated from mRNA, which is transcribed from the gene. However, the proteome is much larger than the genome for a given organism. Give two reasons why there are more proteins than type of genes.
Explain how differential gene expression yields a variety of cell types in a multi-cellular eukaryote. Explain how DNA is packaged into chromosomes. Explain how packing influences gene expression.

What are three malignant properties of cancer that distinguish them from benign tumors?
Punnett squares are convenient ways to represent the types and frequencies of gametes and progeny in experimental crosses. This Punnett square shows the results of a Gg x Gg cross to form F2 progeny.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having two immunesystems in our body: the innate and adaptive?

Biology 101 Select at least 2 cell structures (organelles). What hypothesis could you form to explain what would happen to the cell or the organism if each cell structure were damaged or destroyed?
In an experimental template having perfectly placed 5 nucleosomes there is a single EcoR1 site buried near dyad axis of the 3rd nucleosome. Is it possible for a modeller to make this site accessible without disturbing any of the adjacent nucleosom..
There are two general mechanisms of miRNA/AGO complexes. If miRNAs are fully complementary with mRNAs, AGO can cleave these targets. If there are mismatches between the middle positions of miRNAs and their targets, then the miRNA/AGO complexes can..
