The Biopsychosocial Model

This discussion will focus on understanding human behavior from the biopsychosocial perspective. Human services professionals need to know how to formulate biopsychosocial descriptions of their clients and how to apply this information when assessing, evaluating, and developing interventions for their clients. In addition, it is important for human services professionals to consider both protective and risk factors that their clients are experiencing and how those can be potential threats or supports of developmental outcomes. Please respond to the following:

  • Define the three main dimensions of the biopsychosocial perspective.
  • Think about a time when you or a close friend or family member was struggling with an issue.
  • Identify one biophysical, one psychological, and one social factor that impacted the situation.
  • Discuss what protective factor(s) assisted you or your friend/family member in overcoming the situation.
  • Discuss what risk factor(s) impacted the situation.
  • Looking back on the situation from your current perspective, would you have recommended a different intervention? If yes, what would you have recommended?
