ELLs in the Classroom

Purpose

Working with students whose first language is something other than English (ELs) and those who are at risk for school failure, is one of the most important elements of teaching. This assignment will explore ways teachers can promote positive educational environments to foster academic and personal growth for all students.

Part 1

Define and explain the term "English Language Learner"
What factors place students at-risk for possible school failure?

Part 2

What elements will you include in your classroom for ELL students?
How can instruction geared towards ELL students support success?
List and explain at least three classroom supports you can use and reasons why each will positively influence the academic achievement of ELs.
List and explain 3-5 support for students who have been identified as at-risk for school failure
Are these the same or different than supports specific for ELL students (if so, how?)
How can teachers and the public school system as a whole can address the needs of students and families whose first language is something other than English, and students who are at risk for school failure?

Part 3

"Me as a Culturally Competent Teacher." Construct a one-half to one-page philosophy of how you can become a culturally competent teacher and what this means to your teaching and your students. Consider how a culturally competent teacher might also connect with students and families. Questions to help you compose this philosophy are:

What defines a teacher who is culturally competent?
How can you prepare now to become culturally competent in the classroom?
What you plan to do in the future to continue to perfect your culturally responsive skills?
How do you plan to connect with the multicultural community as a whole?
What does teaching in a multicultural classroom mean to your students and to you?

Begin with a clear introduction, paragraphs that respond to each point, and a concluding paragraph that pulls your work together. You can write one introduction and conclusion and address both parts within the body of your writing. In all you MUST include;

At least 3 full pages of writing
In-text citations in APA formatting (within the content of your writing).
You need to reference any time you are pulling information from an outside source, including course material.
If you are using a direct quote, include page numbers.
