Title: Silviculture in a Changing World - A case study

Topic - THE IMPACTS OF DROUGHT ON AUSTRALIAN EUCALYPTUS GLOBULUS PLANTATIONS AND APPLIED SILVICULTURE PRACTICES FOR MITIGATION OF UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Question 1 - A short overview of the situation you have selected.

This should be focussed on a particular aspect of silviculture in a specific geographic location. Examples might include the growing of a particular species for a particular purpose; it might include a specific forest type (natural or plantation); it might relate to a specific silvicultural practice or system currently used, or a specific pest.

Question 2 - A short summary of the aspect of the changing world you have selected.

This might include the main predicted climatic changes; new threats to the trees (e.g. pests and diseases); changing demand of forest products; changing role of forest in society. (You will come to appreciate during the programme that these various types of change are highly interconnected, but you are advised in this case to limit yourself to considering one or two aspects of the changing world)

Question 3 - Here you should consider both direct/indirect and short/medium/long term effects of the change that you have identified in the previous section. Remember that this is a silviculture module, so you should focus on the impacts of change on the current silvicultural situation that you identified in the first section.

Question 4 - Here you should make informed suggestions for silvicultural practices that could mitigate undesirable impacts or enhance the desired impacts of the change you have selected, ideally suggesting a number of options and making a specific recommendation (in the final essay - not necessarily here).

You might, for example, consider alternative silvicultural systems; different species/provenances; changes to species composition; regeneration management; tending; harvesting.
