Torrens University
Assessment 1 - Observation to Interpretation
Learning Outcomes
a) Apply observational skills learnt in this subject to describe, develop and complete assessments.
b) Demonstrate capacity to research and apply a structured systematic process of inquiry to source, analyse and evaluate information through reading, writing and illustration.
This assessment task requires students to source THREE images for evaluation. Students are asked to document their observations and interpretation for each image selected by responding to the following questions:
- What is the primary subject matter of your image?
- How has your image been captured or created? What medium is used and why?
- What is your first impression of this image? Describe the scene or composition.
- In your opinion why do you think it has been composed this way? What is the designer or photographer trying to tell us?
- What is the difference between your first impression and your final interpretation of your image? List three differences.
Using the above questions as prompts, you are required to review your picture, identify and write a short description of any specific elements that carry meaning.
Collate your responses and use them to write a 500-word reflective evaluation (+/- 10%) that identifies what you have observed and outlines an interpretation of your image.
Submission Instructions:
The assessment will be collated and submitted as ONE PDF presentation in the following format:
1. Title page including student name, student number and assessment title.
2. Contain a copy of the three selected images.
3. A copy of the above questions including your responses.
4. The 500-word written reflective evaluation.
Image requirements: Please ensure your image is of good resolution (no pixilation) and is saved as a jpeg prior to embedding it into your document. Be aware that images that are too large will increase your file size and may be problematic when uploading to Blackboard for submission. Students may choose any image they like, however, they must use APA referencing.
References: Students are required to use appropriate academic language where necessary and adhere to APA referencing conventions.
Assessment 2 - Tableau Vivant (Living picture) (Part A)
Learning Outcomes
b) Demonstrate capacity to research and apply a structured systematic process of inquiry to source, analyse and evaluate information through reading, writing and illustration.
c) Apply knowledge of major milestones in history to have designed an artefact informed by history - have nominated and translated a key learning into own context.
Instructions:
The key to any successful creative solution is in the planning as it ensures that your ideas and the final execution are well considered and relevant.
Below is a suggested pathway for your investigation.
Step 1: Research and Investigation
• Identify a period of history that you would like to represent.
• Investigate that period - what context do you need to establish?
• Audience analysis - who will be viewing this image? And, how can we ensure we are communicating effectively to them?
Step 2: Ideation
• Based on your initial research, develop concepts for your tableau. In what ways can you convey this story convincingly that helps to express meaning in a engaging way?
Step 3: Planning
• Iterate alternative composition options, lighting, graphic effects. clothing, location/background, as well as at least 3 symbols and designed objects that may also be appropriate in establishing the context and story, and therefore meaning behind your tableau. Your tableau can be purely photographic or may combine photographic and digital illustration.
In your design process journal, document your approach to the above stages of research and planning using an array of written and visual methods including, but not limited to, traditional academic research as well as sketching, mood boards, storyboarding, brainstorming, prototyping and photography.
Your design process journal should use appropriate academic language where necessary and adhere to APA referencing conventions.
Assessment 3 - Tableau Vivant (Living picture) (Part B)
Learning Outcomes
c) Apply knowledge of major milestones in history to have designed an artefact informed by history - have nominated and translated a key learning into own context.
d) Demonstrate creativity through propositional, imaginative and iterative thought and action, to independently solve a design challenge.
Instructions:
This assessment requires you to photograph and prepare a small presentation, no more than 5-8-slides, accompanied with visual elements that document your final tableau and development process.
In support of our presentation, you are also to fully document the final composition process using your design process journal.
Below is a suggested pathway to document your design process: Step 1: Identify
• Choose one idea from Assessment 2 that you would like to develop.
Step 2: Experiment
• Explore varied ways of visualizing this image. Remember that the medium itself can support your image; colour or b/w; sepia toning; Kodak orange colour cast; canvas or other textures.
• Play with visual elements including composition, graphic effects, lighting, clothing, location/background, as well as symbols and designed objects that may also be appropriate in establishing the context and story, and therefore meaning within the tableau.
Step 3: Refine
• Seek feedback and make changes where necessary.
Step 4: Finalise
• Make choices to finalise your visual elements.
• Prepare and create your final tableau.
In your design process journal, document your approach to the making, refinement and finalisation of your tableau using an array of written and visual methods including, but not limited to, traditional academic research as well as sketching, mood boards, storyboarding, brainstorming, prototyping and photography.
Your design process journal will also include:
- An introductory paragraph that outlines your design project - the subject you have chosen to present and the historical period you have chosen.
- Discuss the detail of your tableau. How have you established context and meaning? Consider the significance of your content? How does it connect with the historical period you are representing? What meanings does it convey? Does it have any connection to present culture?
- An explanation of your design process - how did you progress from your initial idea through construction to final outcome. What issues arose and how did you address them?
- A concluding paragraph in which you draw your discussion to a close by summarising the previous content and making a concise statement.
- Include an APA reference list for all documents you cited within your journal.
Presentation (5-8-slides, supported with visual elements)
In addition to the digital submission:
Face to face students will be presenting this assessment in class in Week 12
Students are required to record a voice-over narration to further elaborate on their presentation. This should provide further context and detail. Please use the documents below for more instructions on how to record audio. The audio should be clear and succinct with the use of correct terminology.
