Question
Interviewing patients is part of health assessment and is a daily occurrence in nursing practice. Think of a specific time in your nursing practice when you had to interview a patient. How did the process of communication influence your interaction with your patient? If you feel like that interview went well, what factors led to a positive nurse-patient interaction? If you feel like that interview did not go well, what factors led to problems with the nurse-patient interaction? What internal and external factors influenced how the interview went? How were techniques of communication used well or not used well in the interview? Include verbal and nonverbal skills. What would you continue to use and what would you change based on that interview? What changes would you make to your interview if the patient was an infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age child, adolescent, or older adult? If the patient you interviewed had special needs, how did you deal with that? Please write out a SOAP note based on this patient and the problem you addressed. Use SOAP notes. Make sure that you list specific information based on your experience rather than a general overview of these topics.
