Assessment 1

According to the play Love by Patricia Cornelius, choose a theatre in Sydney (preferably a small theatre, but also a little bit famous) for the budget of the whole performance. Then write an essay about why this play is chosen, why this theatre is chosen and how to make the budget!(  1500 words)

You will be provided with a fictional arts management / production management scenario where they will be asked to create an annual budget for an independent theatre company.

Categorisation and Articulation of elements of two productions that will affect the budget. These may include venue, cast size and style of production

Remember that, in accordance with the above hypothetical description, you need to choose a structure that will enable you to apply for funding with the Australia Council, Create NSW or City of Sydney/local government and also to accept donations from philanthropists or others wishing to donate money to your company for tax purposes, so think about this carefully...

Admin, Rehearsal and Performance costs

Some of the $10,000 donated to your company might be put towards setting up a permanent 'office space' for the company or it might be put towards the costs of rehearsal and performance venue. This is up to you but think about how you are going to get the most bang for your buck.

If you are able to operate the company from your home office, then you should allow for a percentage of the cost of electricity and internet access from your home usage, as well as other admin costs such as phone, paper, printing and photocopying which you might use in a normal office environment.

Think about your donation as cash in bank ($10,000) and imagine that you might have some other cash in bank from the box office of your previous productions ($5,000) and some other donations through fundraising through crowdfunding ($5,000) and you have managed to secure in-kind funding through local council (rehearsal space, worth $5,000) and one of the local businesses (printing at cost, worth $3,000). This means that you might be starting with $28,000.

How will you spend it? Rehearsal Spaces:

Rehearsal spaces can be costly and most are per hour. However, some can be negotiated on a daily rate but you might have to be flexible with hours.
