As a way of building on the themes explored in the course and beyond, students will explore one of the sections on https://hackcur.io, a video portal devoted to the cultural and political phenomena of hacking. These are the sections you can choose from : (1) anti-security, (2) blockchain, (3) free and open source, (4) gaming, (5) hacktivism, (6) inclusions + exclusions, (7) labor, (8) phreaking, (9) piracy, or (10) trolling.
YOU CANNOT WRITE ON THE SECTION HACKER DEPICTIONS AS THAT WAS COVERED IN OUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT.
Length: 600-1000 words - not including the bibliography (you can go over 150 words, but 600 is the absolute minimum)
Requirements
Offer a brief summary of the section (your introductory paragraphs): what are the main ideas and topics?
Focus in and develop one of the themes presented in the section (remaining paragraphs). Here are a few examples: (1) in the gaming section there is a short video of George Hotz who was being sued by Sony, (2) in the free and open source section, there is a section on "tractor hacking," which we discussed in the second lecture, (3) in inclusions + exclusions, there is a section on gender activism in hacking, or (4) in labor, a section on "life hacking."
Aside from the sources presented on hack_curio, consult one scholarly source that helps you focus in and develop one of the issues. You need to do some outside research, as you cannot use course readings for this (hint: who are the authors of the short articles in your section? Can you locate an article or a book by one of them? That is a good place to start).
